According to the Maritime Injury Guide, “slips and falls aboard vessels can lead to several serious injuries. The unfortunate fact is that some companies and employers tend to cut corners in areas of safety in order to save money, which leads to injuries that should have never happened.”

That’s just wrong. We have several ways to prevent marine slips-and-falls.

One of Safeguard’s very first customers is the largest tank barge operator in the United States.
Their safety policy states that all injuries and accidents can be prevented. A goal of zero injuries is considered realistic and obtainable.

With this goal in mind, Safeguard was consulted with regard to slippery ladders on single point mooring systems (SPM). SPMs are large buoys, permanently anchored to the seabed, with bearings that allow rotation so that a moored vessel can freely swivel. They can also include hoses for fluid transfer.

SPM access ladders are always wet, posing a slip-and-fall hazard and a significant threat to a zero-injuries policy. Plus, one of the worst places for slip-and-fall accidents is in the middle of the ocean!

Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti-Slip Ladder Rung Covers provide the quick, durable, long-term solution that our customer has come to rely on. Safeguard products are trusted in critical environments like these – you can be sure they will be effective in your applications.

Each June, we celebrate National Safety Month, a good time to step back and view the big picture of safety concerns. The 2016 Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index, shown below, outlines the causes and costs of US workplace injuries. While it shows the leading issue to be overexertion, slips, trips and falls are split into three categories. When combined, these injuries account for 28.9% of the total and $17.92 billion – clearly #1 in both cause and cost.

Now consider that so many of these injuries are preventable. At Safeguard, we have a long history of creative anti-slip solutions. Drop us a line to let us know about your problem areas – together we can prevent slips-and-falls!

Many of us are lucky to have relatives living longer than ever before. The population of older Americans is growing and a lot of us find ourselves concerned about their safety. Most older folks want to remain independent but family members worry that each venture on the stairs or walk is a potentially life-threatening activity. Some serious slip-and-fall statistics from the CDC:

  • One in three older adults falls each year
  • Emergency departments treated approximately 2.5 million nonfatal falls in 2013
  • 734,000 of those nonfatal fall victims were admitted to the hospital
  • That year, 25,500 older adults died from unintentional falls
  • More than 250,000 hip fractures are reported every year, and 95 percent of those are from falls

Falls are such a major health risk for the elderly that preventing them should be a priority. Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti®-Slip® Covers for steps and walkways are extremely effective, easy to install, and they last a long time. Our premium colors will enhance the décor of any home or residence while providing superior traction even when wet or at an angle like an access ramp.

If you are of a certain age, the term NSF may take you back to that time when you wrote a check and promptly forgot about it, resulting in the dreaded Non-Sufficient Funds or bounced check. Do not ask how I know this.

But, today, we at Safeguard are celebrating NSF! Our stainless steel based, anti-slip step covers, walkway covers, and ladder rung covers have been Certified by NSF International for use in food and beverage processing.

Food and beverage processing can be quite messy, with lots of spills making floors very slippery and unsafe. At the same time, food and beverage processing people need to keep things super clean and free of bacteria. So anti-slip treatment is essential but it must meet certain standards. Those standards are set by NSF International.

NSF International began in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation, developing the first standards for sanitation of soda fountain and luncheonette equipment. To date, they have developed more than 90 public health standards and over 30 protocols for appliances, food equipment, drinking water filters, and other products. Products that meet these standards bear the NSF mark.

Since safety is Safeguard Technology’s number one goal, NSF Certification on our Safeguard® Hi-Traction® stainless steel products makes us twice as happy – safe to use in any environment and, as always, protecting people from slips-and-falls!

US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2014 (the most recent year published) show that total recordable case rate for hospitals (injury and illness cases per 100 full-time workers) is 6.2. The hospital injury rate is higher than in mining (3.8), hazardous waste treatment and disposal (4.6), and manufacturing (4.0). Now that should set off an alarm for health and safety professionals.
