Customers need the safest anti-slip… Safeguard is the only option

At Safeguard, we are all about preventing slips-and-falls, one of the top causes of injuries across all walks of life. But, safety has many facets. We always strive to meet the highest standards, like providing ASTM E84 – Class A anti-slip material.

Materials used on interiors of vehicles, buildings, ships, and drilling rigs must be tested to be sure they allow time for safe egress in case of a fire. Flame spread (how fast fire moves) is a key concern.

Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti-Slip Covers with FRP base material are ASTM E84 Class A Compliant. Material rated as Class A has a lower flame spread, and therefore a better performance rating, than a Class B or C material.

We’ve had a long, successful partnership with folks in the transportation industry,  keeping the interiors of trains, school buses, motor coaches, and more slip-free while also complying with stringent FR specs. Can we help you improve safety, too? Contact Us.

Inside and out, your offshore vessel must be safe for the people aboard. That’s why regulations specify that indoor FRP grating must meet acceptable levels of flame spread and smoke generation/toxicity. Regulators have extended this requirement to include the use of IMO Compliant Anti-Slip Step Covers to prevent slips-and-falls on drilling rigs and offshore vessels.

Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti-Slip Covers for steps and walkways with steel base material have been tested to the ISO 5659-2 protocol and found to comply with the two applicable IMO Resolutions. Installed over compliant grating, your crew will not only be protected against slips-and-falls but also from flames and toxic smoke in case of a fire.

The two relevant IMO Resolutions:

  • Section
    5.5.2: IMO Resolution A.653(16)
    – Recommendations on Improved Fire Test Procedures
    (Flame Spread)
  • Section
5.7.2: IMO Resolution MSC.61(67), Part 2 Smoke and Toxicity Test
    – IMO Fire
    Test Procedures Code (FTPC)

According to ABS Rules for Building and Classing Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (2017 – see p. 45), all FRP gratings fitted in enclosed areas must have low flame spread characteristics as proven by either an ASTM E-84 test result with flame spread rating of 20 or less or tested to IMO Resolution A.653(16).

Additionally, any FRP grating within accommodation, service, and control spaces must have low smoke characteristics as determined by the approved test procedures in IMO Resolution MSC.61(67), Part 2 Smoke and Toxicity Test- IMO Fire Test Procedures Code (FTPC). Low smoke characteristics refer to the amount of smoke generated when the material catches fire and also to the toxicity of the smoke. Safeguard’s IMO Compliant Anti-Slip Step Covers have been found to meet the standards.

Keep your crew as safe as possible – use Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti-Slip Covers with steel base material to prevent injuries on steps and walkways. Rest assured that workers in enclosed areas will have ample time to evacuate in case of fire.
