Anti-Slip Products that Comply with IMO Resolutions for Offshore Drilling Units
Safeguard Hi-Traction Anti-Slip Step Covers for Offshore Drilling Units and Marine Vessels

Inside and out, your offshore vessel must be safe for the people aboard. That’s why regulations specify that indoor FRP grating must meet acceptable levels of flame spread and smoke generation/toxicity. Regulators have extended this requirement to include the use of IMO Compliant Anti-Slip Step Covers to prevent slips-and-falls on drilling rigs and offshore vessels.

Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti-Slip Covers for steps and walkways with steel base material have been tested to the ISO 5659-2 protocol and found to comply with the two applicable IMO Resolutions. Installed over compliant grating, your crew will not only be protected against slips-and-falls but also from flames and toxic smoke in case of a fire.

The two relevant IMO Resolutions:

  • Section 5.5.2: IMO Resolution A.653(16) – Recommendations on Improved Fire Test Procedures (Flame Spread)
  • Section 5.7.2: IMO Resolution MSC.61(67), Part 2 Smoke and Toxicity Test – IMO Fire Test Procedures Code (FTPC)

According to ABS Rules for Building and Classing Mobile Offshore Drilling Units (2017 – see p. 45), all FRP gratings fitted in enclosed areas must have low flame spread characteristics as proven by either an ASTM E-84 test result with flame spread rating of 20 or less or tested to IMO Resolution A.653(16).

Additionally, any FRP grating within accommodation, service, and control spaces must have low smoke characteristics as determined by the approved test procedures in IMO Resolution MSC.61(67), Part 2 Smoke and Toxicity Test- IMO Fire Test Procedures Code (FTPC). Low smoke characteristics refer to the amount of smoke generated when the material catches fire and also to the toxicity of the smoke. Safeguard’s IMO Compliant Anti-Slip Step Covers have been found to meet the standards.

Keep your crew as safe as possible – use Safeguard® Hi-Traction® Anti-Slip Covers with steel base material to prevent injuries on steps and walkways. Rest assured that workers in enclosed areas will have ample time to evacuate in case of fire.

The large volume of traffic in and out of schools and universities every day increases the potential risk of slips-and-falls for students and staff. From a small elementary school to the largest university in the country, slips and trips can occur anywhere and anytime. Slip and fall prevention at schools begins with officials, architects, and facility managers being diligent with protecting students and staff from harm.

If you are of a certain age, the term NSF may take you back to that time when you wrote a check and promptly forgot about it, resulting in the dreaded Non-Sufficient Funds or bounced check. Do not ask how I know this.

But, today, we at Safeguard are celebrating NSF! Our stainless steel based, anti-slip step covers, walkway covers, and ladder rung covers have been Certified by NSF International for use in food and beverage processing.

Food and beverage processing can be quite messy, with lots of spills making floors very slippery and unsafe. At the same time, food and beverage processing people need to keep things super clean and free of bacteria. So anti-slip treatment is essential but it must meet certain standards. Those standards are set by NSF International.

NSF International began in 1944 as the National Sanitation Foundation, developing the first standards for sanitation of soda fountain and luncheonette equipment. To date, they have developed more than 90 public health standards and over 30 protocols for appliances, food equipment, drinking water filters, and other products. Products that meet these standards bear the NSF mark.

Since safety is Safeguard Technology’s number one goal, NSF Certification on our Safeguard® Hi-Traction® stainless steel products makes us twice as happy – safe to use in any environment and, as always, protecting people from slips-and-falls!

US Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics for 2014 (the most recent year published) show that total recordable case rate for hospitals (injury and illness cases per 100 full-time workers) is 6.2. The hospital injury rate is higher than in mining (3.8), hazardous waste treatment and disposal (4.6), and manufacturing (4.0). Now that should set off an alarm for health and safety professionals.
